Student Loan Repayment

When you graduate college, it is only a matter of time before you have to begin student loan repayment. This usually occurs anywhere between two and nine months after your graduation.

As soon as it is time to start repaying student loans, it is important to make that first payment and all following payments on time. Student loans repayment is crucial because you can get into a lot of trouble if you don’t pay back your loans.

But there is a right way and a wrong way to go about student loan repayment. We’ll start with the wrong way.

The last thing that you want to do when paying back student loans is pay them back as they are. You will find yourself getting several bills for several loans and these payments can be hundreds of dollars each, depending on the amount of each loan.

It can be rather financially difficult when student loans repayment involves several loans at several hundred dollars each month. Most college graduates do not have that type of money unless their parents pay the bill or they landed an incredible job straight out of college.

But why go about student loan repayment in this manner when you don’t have to?

The proper way to go about student loans repayment

The right way to go about student loans repayment is to look into student loan consolidation. Whether you acquired your loans through private financing or through the U.S. Department of Education, there are different student loan repayment plans that you can take advantage of. Those plans include:

• Standard payment – Payment is made in equal amounts each month until the loan is paid off. This is usually done for a period of 10 years.

• Extended payment – The payment amount is lower, but the term of the loan is longer. This also results in more interest. However, the monthly obligation is not as difficult to meet.

• Graduating payment – This is a payment that is set up to increase throughout the life of the loan. This is assuming that your income is going to increase as well.

• Contingent payment – This is a payment plan that is contingent upon how much income you bring in from year to year. Your payment amount is adjusted based on your gross annual income on your income tax return.

You can take advantage of one of these plans in your student loan repayment. Don’t think that you have to stick with paying your loans as they are when you don’t have to. Remember to talk to your financial institution about consolidating your student loans. This makes student loan repayment much easier. Whether you’re dealing with a private institution or the government, consolidation is an option that most college graduates take advantage of. This allows them to go about building their future without having to worry about student loan repayment that is beyond what they can afford.
